Beeswax
Beeswax is a natural byproduct derived from beekeeping. Wax is collected from hives during the honey extraction process or during routine maintenance when bees create wax in undesirable locations. The bees and the health of the hive are never hurt or damaged in this process. The color of the beeswax varies depending on age, location, use and natural factors. Once collected, the wax is melted down and strained of any impurities or debris, then left to solidify. What's left is rendered beeswax ready for use in any number of beeswax products, such as in our lip balm. Beeswax is known as a high quality ingredient in lip balm. It has been shown to have moisturizing and anti-microbial properties.
Lanolin Oil
Lanolin oil is a product derived from sheep's wool. If you have ever touched a sheep, you may have noticed a somewhat sticky or greasy residue on your hands afterwards. This was lanolin! After shearing, wool can be pressed and processed to release lanolin. In its natural state at room temperature, lanolin oil is actually a solid substance somewhat similar in consistency to vaseline. Lanolin is water resistant and known to be a high quality moisturizer. It provides a natural complement to our beeswax and makes our lip balm both effective and long-lasting.
Organic Coconut Oil
Despite the many wonderful qualities of lanolin oil, the truth is that it is sticky, thick and heavy. While our original recipes did not include coconut oil, the finished product did not have a pleasant feel. Coconut oil has many positive health effects in its own right, but we like it for the balance it provides the lanolin in our lip balm, leaving a smooth, light and soft feel on the lips.
doTerra Essential Oils
When rounding out our product, we were seeking a high quality essential oil to add a gentle flavoring and scent to our lip balm. Having an emphasis on the highest quality ingredients, we immediately sought out doTerra essential oils for their sterling reputation. A little goes a long way and we have enjoyed experimenting with a variety of scents!
